Achievement Bucket List

There are different levels of achievements, of course. Breaking a world record is not quite the same as finally going to the dentist, although to certain people they might feel just as unconquerable. The key is to decide what you want to achieve within your own life – what will be meaningful to you – and go from there. The below achievements are just to get you started, but if there’s something in your own life that you want to conquer, go for it!

Fully declutter my home

If you haven’t yet seen the Netflix series ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’ and decided to throw out half your stuff (and organise the other half into neat little boxes) then you may still be living in a pile of your own filth. Look around your home and decide which items ‘spark joy’, and which items are just taking up space. If you have adult children who still live at home, this may apply to them too.

Find a Fossil

Imagine digging around and coming across a big old dinosaur in your backyard! Okay it’s pretty unlikely there’s anything left in the suburbs, but there’s got to be something left out there for you to discover. And dinosaurs are unequivocally awesome, everybody knows this.

Get in the Guinness Book of World Records

It could be for having the largest collection of fighter jets (110), spinning the most hula hoops simultaneously (200), spending the longest time in an abdominal plank (8 hours 1 min)

Watch all of the James Bond movies

Add to Done ListDONE

The debonair English gentleman who invented the spy genre, James Bond is the epitome of cool, calm, and collected. There are 26 James Bond movies, the first being released in 1962, which means fifty-odd hours of James Bond antics. Cars blowing up, buildings blowing up, Russians blowing up. You better hope that tomorrow never dies, because you’re going to need it to finish all these movies.

Read the Game of Thrones Series

Add to Done ListDONE

There are currently five books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, with the first novel, A Game of Thrones, lending its title to the TV series. The series has been hugely praised for its complexity, well-written characters, and immersive quality, so you may want to take the phone off the hook and settle in for a few days of solid reading.

Buy my Dream House

Add to Done ListDONE

Home ownership is considered a milestone achievement – you’re a real, practicing adult once you own your own house. When you finally choose your dream house, you can settle right in and spend time making it a home. No more asking the agent whether you can buy a dog or hang a painting – you’re your own agent now!

Collect one of every gemstone

Add to Done ListDONE

There are hundreds of different gemstones to find, with some being much more expensive and rare than others. Some are known as birthstones, like garnet, emerald, and amethyst. Others are full of historic meaning, like Jade and Turquoise. All are beautiful gifts from nature, perfectly crafted deep in the earth.

Conquer my fear of dentists

Add to Done ListDONE

Only babies are scared of the dentist these days – there’s too much modern technology for a check-up to actually hurt anymore. Plus, your teeth will thank you for it.

Own a yacht

Add to Done ListDONE

A yacht is more than just a boat. One doesn’t save up for a yacht, or take out a loan to buy one. A yacht is something one acquires when they have simply too much money to know what to do with; when to purchase one would make barely a dint in their vast bank account. When one gets to a point where they can say “I guess I don’t own a yacht yet, why not? Here’s my chequebook.” Money is freedom, and so is a yacht.

Own a jet ski

Add to Done ListDONE

There is never any real reason to own a jet ski – they’re obnoxiously loud, ruin the environment, and you’re riding it just for the sake of riding it. But to many people, a jet ski is a status symbol, a sign that you’ve made it. And for that, it makes the list of achievements.

Get the high score on a corner store video game

Add to Done ListDONE

Getting a high score on a video game requires hours of practice – hand cramps, glazed-over eyes, and many litres of Mountain Dew. But when you finally get there, when you get to put your name at the top of the ladder and say ‘YES. I DID IT.’ – it all becomes worth it. Think of the glory!

Get promoted

Add to Done ListDONE

You spend so many hours each day at your job, and devote so much of your energy to it. So of course it feels good when all that hard work pays off, when someone else recognises not only your abilities but your potential. If you manage to get promoted, congrats! It’s a huge achievement and you should be very proud. Treat yourself out to a nice dinner and a glass of wine, you deserve it!
